VDOT URGES DRIVERS TO DELAY TRAVEL IF POSSIBLE

Roads in Salem District are mostly snow covered

VDOT and contract crews are plowing and placing chemicals and abrasives on interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599).  However, roads remain snow covered due to the continuing snowfall.  Drivers should only travel if absolutely necessary to give crews time to clear the roads.

If drivers must travel they will find interstate and primary roads in moderate condition, which means they are mostly snow covered.  Many secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) are in moderate to severe condition, which means they have significant snow on the roadway.  If travel is essential, drivers should check road conditions before they leave by logging onto www.511Virginia.org.

Periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to continue through Friday and into Saturday, which could make travel hazardous. Equipment operators will continue to focus on interstate and primary roads until the snow stops and these roads are clear.   Then crews will begin to plow secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above).

The 12-county VDOT Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.  VDOT is responsible for maintaining county roads; cities and large towns are responsible for snow removal on roads maintained by that locality.
